Award for a Study about Electrosmog and Bees
(Translated from Neuland, March 2004)
The two Landau scientists, Prof. Hermann Stever, a Mathematician and Head of the Department for Educational Information Technology and Dr Jochen Kuhn, Secondary school teacher in the German town of Rheinzabern and Lecturer at the Institute of Physics at the Landau Campus, have been honoured twice for their innovative research studies:
The Canadian International Institute for Advanced Studies in Systems Research and Cybernetics (IIAS, based at the University of Windsor, Ontario) awarded the two its ‘Best Paper Award’ at an event in Baden-Baden (Germany) with 280 fellow scientists from 39 countries in attendance. Moreover, in recognition of their excellent research activity, the Institute invited Stever and Kuhn join its panel of affiliated scientists and to become their only two new German Fellows. Already a year earlier, the IIAS had honoured the two scientists by awarding them their ‘Innovation Award’.
The Educational Information Technology specialist Stever and the physicist Kuhn received this award for their uniquely innovative and groundbreaking studies of the effects of electrosmog on learning processes. To examine the effects, the two scientists developed a model which they tested on bee populations. According to Stever, bees are particularly useful as bio-indicators because the bee brain is very similar to the human brain and similar experiments on humans were impossible.
Stever and Kuhn are convinced that their research approach offers a possibility to resolve questions with regards to the effects of electrosmog in general and mobile phone radiation in particular. ‘What makes our research partnership interesting is the combination of a theoretical approach with a practical implementation’, explains Stever. His theoretical mathematical models form the basis of the research approach. The practical study design and implementation are delivered by the physicist Kuhn.
In the current Winter semester, the team’s research activities continue in the form of a multi-disciplinary research seminar, in which a further experimental and research plan will be developed by entomologists from the Institute for Apiology in Mayen (Germany), physicists, mathematicians, biologists and statisticians of the University of Landau.
Further to this planning stage, the Institute for Apiology in Mayen will conduct a comprehensive field study in the following spring, in order to specifically study to non-thermal effects of electromagnetic radiation on the learning behaviour of bees. First results are expected in summer 2005.
