Cell Phones Linked to Acoustic Tumors for the Fourth Time (reply)

If you still doubt that cell phone tumor
studies are free of political agendas, take
a look at a new paper from the U.K.

This is the fourth epidemiological study to show a
risk of developing an acoustic neuroma, a tumor of the
auditory nerve, following long-term use of a cell phone.

Yet, the authors neglect to highlight this key
finding in the conclusion section of their abstract,
focusing instead on the absence of an increase
in brain cancer.

The research team, which includes Valerie Beral of Oxford
University and Joachim Schüz of IARC, also touts
the study as prospective. We disagree. It is really no
better than previous retrospective studies.

The controversy continues, with no end in sight.

FCC & Cell Phone Industry: A Cozy Relationship (reply)

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the cell phone industry
have an overly cozy relationship, according to a two-year investigation by
the EMR Policy Institute, with the assistance of an industry insider.

This may explain why the FCC has never levied a fine against a cell phone
company for exceeding the Commission's RF exposure limits from a base
station antenna.

"The FCC is colluding with the cell phone carriers and the result is lax
enforcement," says Deb Carney, an attorney and a director of the Institute.

In the first systematic measurement survey of its kind, Lucas Portelli has
the often-reported inability of researchers to repeat experiments showing

HELSINKI, April 14, 2012—On April 12, Mona Nilsson blogged that Norwegian newspapers brought attention to EHS. Nilsson is an investigative reporter who in 2011 uncovered the industry connections of Swedish epidemiologist Anders Ahlbom, leading to his resignation from the IARC meeting classifying carcinogenicity of cell phone radiation.
According to Nilsson's posting, three major Norwegian newspapers published simultaneously on April 12, a story where Mike Repacholi, former Head of WHO EMF Project and Chairman Emeritus of the ICNIRP, complains that Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Head of the WHO, spread fear of cell phones by admitting that she suffers EHS symptoms from cell phone radiation,. Also, Norwegian journal Plot published in April/May issue a long story about this subject.

EM Sensitivity: Mike Repacholi vs. Gro Harlem Brundtland (reply)

One of the long-standing questions about
Mike Repacholi's tenure at the WHO in Geneva
is why Gro Harlem Brundtland, the then head
of WHO, did not rein in Repacholi's pro industry
EMF project.

This was all the more perplexing after Brundtland
disclosed that she suffered from electromagnetic
hypersensitivity, a condition Repacholi refused to
acknowledge --and still doesn't accept.

Norwegian journalist Thomas Ergo has been looking
into the dispute and has published a number of
articles about what he has found out.

Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland to Launch Health School in Canada (reply)

Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland. Former World Health Organization Director-General and Prime Minister of Norway Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland will be on campus next Thursday, April 19, to help launch the University of Waterloo’s new School of Public Health and Health Systems.

A world leader in public Health, Dr. Brundtland began her career as a physician before getting involved in politics, serving as minister for environmental affairs, and later as Prime Minister of Norway for three terms in the 1980s. She became Director-General of the WHO in 1998 and chaired the World Commission of Environment and Development, known widely as the Brundtland Commission. She now sits as one of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders who work together for peace and human rights.

Dr. Brundtland will be delivering a keynote address entitled “The Importance of Public Health to Global Wellbeing” at the Thursday launch event, which takes place from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the J.G. Hagey Hall of the Humanities. Registration is required and event details are available online.

The new School of Public Health and Health Systems, which received Senate approval in May of last year, aims to establish the university as a world leader in public health training, research, and analysis by working with provincial, national, and international partners to produce relevant and creative research to solve health challenges, while training a new generation of public health professionals. The school, formerly the Department of Health Studies and Gerontology, is part of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences.

Also see Repacholi vs Brundtland:

If Brundtland’s problem is psychosocial than what is Repacholi’s?
Back some years ago when Michael Repacholi was still based in Australia, he give expert testimony in a New Zealand environment court case over a high-power broadcast tower that was causing community concern. The day before his scheduled testimony at the environment court, he met with the local concerned community group and was very supportive of their concerns. It was remarked to me by one of the attendees that at the community meeting he was very charming and seemed a very reasonable person who genuinely cared about, and agreed with, their concerns. The next day he demolished their concerns in the court on behalf of the broadcasters, who had paid for his time. Whatever people think of Repacholi he is brilliant at what he does best. Its called spin.

So, if Gro Brundtland suffers from a psychsocial problem what might Repacholi suffer from?

IARC Shuts Down Interphone (reply)

IARC has closed the book on the Interphone
project, its $25 million study of mobile phone
tumor risks.

On March 16th, the cancer agency quietly
issued a final report, stating that its work
"has now been formally completed." The
report is dated October 3, 2011.

Dariusz Leszczynski comment.......... (reply)

Coment from Dariusz Leszczynski

HELSINKI, March 14, 2012—On March 8, 2012 the US National Cancer Institute published a study dealing with the risk of glioma (a type of brain cancer) and cell phone radiation.

This study should have made headlines around the world similar to those made by the last year's IARC classification of cell phone radiation as a possible carcinogen. But it did not. One must wonder: why?

When IARC classified cell phone radiation as a possible carcinogen in 2011, I commented in my science blog that it was:

"Big news because for the first time a very prominent evaluation report states it so openly and clearly: RF-EMF is possibly carcinogenic to humans. One has to remember that IARC monographs are considered as "gold standard" in evaluation of carcinogenicity of physical and chemical agents. If IARC says it so clearly then there must be sufficient scientific reason for it, or IARC would not put its reputation behind such claim. Furthermore, what we are used to, are statements that "so-and-so-many-review-reports" from various organizations and expert groups have not found any link between RF-EMF and cancer. These "no-link-found" reviews are many and that is why the news from IARC is big news indeed."

Similarly, the new study from the NCI should be considered big news, because for the first time scientists found that the prediction from the epidemiological study indicating that cell phone radiation might cause an increase in brain cancer has found confirmation in the study that followed the brain cancer trends.

Paper on Cell Phone/Reproductive Function Retracted (reply)

The editor of the International Journal of
Andrology has announced the retraction of
a paper, which claimed to show that cell
phones can impair the reproductive
function of rabbits.

Score one for Germany's Alex Lerchl who
has taken on the role of policing the
EMR/RF literature for bad science and
misconduct.

NCI Disputes Hardell's Cell Phone Tumor Risks (reply)

A new analysis from the U.S. National Cancer Institute
has found that the rates of brain tumors in the
United States are inconsistent with the results of Lennart
Hardell's group in Sweden. The NCI team, led by Mark Little,
does allow that "the U.S. data could be consistent with the
modest excess risks in the Interphone study."

The NCI study, which was posted online yesterday by the
British Medical Journal, might partially undermine the findings
of an expert group convened by the International Agency for
Research on Cancer (IARC) last spring.

Weak RF Blocks Growth of Cancer Cells (reply)

In August, the British Journal of Cancer published
some extraordinary results: Very specific types of
weak electromagnetic fields were able to stabilize
It was pretty much ignored. No one believed it.

The British Journal of Cancer has now released a follow-up

News from MICROWAVE NEWS - WARNING: HIGH FREQUENCY

Source of information: www.microwavenews.com , Short Takes, November 30, 2011

Christopher Ketcham ( http://www.christopherketcham.com/ ), who made a splash early last year with his GQ piece, "Warning: Your Cell Phone May Be Hazardous to Your Health," is back on the EMF beat with a cover story in the latest issue of Earth Island Journal:

"Warning: High Frequency."

The first warning centered on brain tumor risks; the new one focuses on electromagnetic hypersensitivity. One quote from Carl Blackman of the U.S. EPA highlights how controversial the whole issue is: "With my government cap on, I'm supposed to tell you you're perfectly safe," Blackman tells [a woman whose family and farm animals are bedeviled with health problems after a cell tower was installed nearby]. "With my civilian cap on, I have to tell you to consider leaving." See also the accompanying comments by the editor of Earth Island Journal.

Comments by B. Blake Levitt (*), November 30, 2011:
Excellent piece, Chris, as usual. You hit all of the highspots. And thanks to Earth Island Journal for giving the subject decent word count. One thing though… the paper that Dr. Henry Lai and I co-authored on infrastructure exposures, entitled “Biological effects from exposure to electromagnetic radiation emitted by cell tower base stations and other antenna arrays,” appeared in 2010 in Environmental Reviews [18:369-395], one of the peer-reviewed publications of Canada’s now-privatized National Research Council Press, not as stated in the International Commission on Electromagnetic Safety’s publication. I have no doubt that EHS exists. Too many people now report identical symptoms from low-level exposures that are not supposed to be happening according to standard physics models. But then standard linear physics models do not take non-linear effects into consideration. An allergy is a classic non-linear reaction, i.e. a small amount of a substance like bee pollen will cause a seemingly out-of-proportion reaction such as anaphylactic shock. (In fact, all biology is non-linear, including the weather.) No one knows why some people develop allergies to specific things. But Olle Johansson’s work that found changes in skin mast cells are a good indicator of both how and why EHS might be occurring and verified, if not treated. As the body’s largest organ, skin is our first contact with the world. The elephant in the room re: our increasing ambient exposures to EMF/RF is that biology is far more complex than simplistic physics models can or ever will encompass. The wrong profession has been traditionally in charge of this. Plus, any safety standards in place at regulatory agencies are for high-intensity, short-term acute exposures, not the low-level chronic ones common today. In addition, no one takes cumulative effects into consideration from the myriad wireless products embraced by so many today. It is no wonder that some people’s immune system reach a tipping point. We have a biological problem now, not a physics one. And as with us, so with other species. We are not the only ones being affected. Some species are fantastically sensitive to low-level EMF and in fact rely on the earth’s natural fields for migration, mating, etc. Environmentalists, please take note—there is a wealth of information on adverse effects to wildlife. Please consider some of it before continuing to microchip pets, which can develop deadly sarcomas around the chips, or attaching radio collars to everything that moves…

(*) B. Blake Levitt is an award winning medical science writer, author of “Electromagnetic Fields: A Consumer’s Guide to the Issues and How to Protect Ourselves”

Louis Slesin, editor of Microwavenews: “We’re electromagnetic beings. You wouldn’t have a thought in your head without electromagnetic signals. There is electrical signaling going on in your body all the time, and the idea that external electromagnetic fields can’t affect us just doesn’t make sense.”
